This is the cradle of civilization, the oldest city in Europe. Not only is this city home to the Acropolis and some of the most important architectural structures and archaeological finds in the Western world, It is also a very modern city, an urban amalgam of extraordinary art, culture, cuisine and shopping.  After arriving at the airport, our guide will take us on a tour by bus of the highlights of Athens.  This will provide excellent orientation for your free time to explore Athens on your own in the afternoon and evening after we check into our downtown hotel.  (Average Temperature - 73/58)

Sunday, October 15 - Athens, Greece - Acropolis Tour and Embarkation

In the morning, after breakfast at the hotel, we will check out and travel a short distance to the base of the Acropolis where we will meet our guide for a tour of this magnificent landmark.  The term acropolis means upper city and many of the city states of ancient Greece were built around an acropolis where the inhabitants could go as a place of refuge in times of invasion. It's for this reason that the most sacred buildings are usually on the acropolis.  It's the safest most secure place in town.  Following our guided tour, you will have free time for exploring and shopping in the Plaka - the area surrounding the base of the Acropolis with its neoclassical mansions and houses with roofs from red tiles, its small winding roads with their steps, balconies with bougainvilleas, geraniums and jasmines. Plaka is called many times in the Greek literature as the neighbourhood of the Gods.  We then transfer to the cruise ship terminal to board the Norwegian Jade by 12 noon and prepare to sail at 5:00 pm
